Getting Active This Spring May be Kind of a Stretch

What’s better than the long awaited Montana spring?  Getting out and enjoying it! But before you start thinking about cleaning the whole house, sprucing up the yard or hitting the golf course, Juro’s Pharmacy Health and Wellnesshas a few ideas to keep you safe this spring.

A leisurely walk or bike ride are easy ways ease back into activity as the weather warms up.

If you have been sitting most of the winter, your body probably isn’t ready to just tackle the big projects.  There are several simple ways to prevent injuries when you’re enjoying spring.

  • Take a walk. Walking is a great way to get your body warmed up and loosened up before your tasks. Don’t overdo it; you may want to walk after your chores too as a cool down.
  • Warm up stretches are a simple and essential step to a busy day.  Stretching is a way to prepare the body to use the muscle groups that may be a bit “underused” all winter. Take a look at these stretching techniques from Function Fitness Facts. Again, go easy on them.
  • Eat a light meal before your start your projects. Avoid big meals that may weigh you down, just enough to give your body fuel. Save the big meal or restaurant as a reward for a job well-done.
  • Stay hydrated. Keep water with you or close by and avoid too much alcohol on the golf course. Consider a sports drink to replenish your system and prevent cramps.  Dry muscles are sore muscles and that goes for your brain too, so stay hydrated.

clean up what winter has left in the garden.  As medical professionals, we know pushing yourself too hard after a long immobile winter is a bad idea.  We know you’re excited to get outside and get active again, but please proceed with caution.

Here are some tips to keep you healthy in spring swing:

The most important tip is to take your time.  Many individuals want to clean their garden quickly or want to get their body back in shape quickly so they pick up where they left off in the fall work load.  Your muscles are not ready and need to be eased back in to action over the course of a few weeks.

Another important tip for gardening specifically is to use the necessary tools and stretch.  Before you head out to the garden, stretch out your arms and legs properly and make sure your body is ready.  Don’t try to do everything by hand, but use your gardening utensils to help you.  This will prevent you from over using your back or pulling muscles in your hands and arms from too much labor.  Finally, lift with your legs, not your back.

For those of you getting your physique beach-ready, do not exceed a 10 percent increase in effort on workout days.  Your lungs may be telling you to keep going, but your muscles and joints can’t handle it.  This is because your cardio tends to bounce back quicker than your muscles and joints.  Take it easy and take it slow, your muscles will catch up.
