All About Walking Aids

Posted on: March 2nd, 2012 by JurosMedicalBlogger No Comments

For years, I thought there was only one option in walking aid – the old faithful, quad cane with tennis balls attached to the feet.  The one that our kids now know as the weapon of choice for the old man in the movie Up.  Boy was I wrong.  There are endless walking aids that serve multiple everyday tasks for individuals that need extra support.

The Knee Drive Walker

Of course, we have the folding walker, which comes in several designs and sizes.  We carry everything from junior sizes to bariatric sizes with varying capabilities.  We also have a device called the Knee Drive Walker.  This device is classified as a walker, but does not offer much resemblance to the traditional folding walker.

The Knee Drive Walker is actually an alternative to crutches and looks like a mix between a mobility scooter and a child’s tricycle.  You place your injured leg on the padded seat and walk with the free leg, driving yourself around with the handle bars.  This device is gaining popularity because of the fact that it places a lot less strain on the body than crutches do.  Crutches can be painful for the shoulders and require a certain level of balance, which the Knee Drive Walker does not.

Finally, we have the aluminum cane.  These can come in the standard single base or a quad base for additional stability.  They are the perfect solution for active individuals needing just a little support or individuals recovering from a hip or knee surgery.

If you have used one of these walking aids or would like to know more about them, please leave us a comment.  We’d love to hear from you!
