Menopause and Heart Disease: Learn About the Link

Posted on: February 21st, 2013 by JurosMedicalBlogger No Comments

We have discussed menopause in previous posts and its inevitability for all women, as well as how each woman experiences it differently. However, despite the difference in symptom intensity or occurrence, there has been another common link found between all post-menopausal women.  Their risk for heart disease has increased greatly.

Staying active and watching your weight can help you avoid heart disease during and after menopause.

Estrogen is the hormone in the female body that oversees the ovulation and menstruation cycles. More unknown is its role in protecting the female heart by controlling the amount of lipids, or fat, in the body. These lipids make up the cholesterol in the bloodstream, and estrogen helps prevent the buildup of bad cholesterol.

During and after menopause, the female body stops producing estrogen, meaning there is more LDL (bad cholesterol) in your bloodstream. This results in plaque thickening in the arteries and increased blood pressure. So how can post-menopausal women keep an eye on heart disease?

Keep body fat in check- the average American woman gains a pound per year in her 30s and 50s, so try to keep your body mass index (BMI) below 25 (your doctor can help you with this measurement). Focus on the inches, not the pounds by…

Exercising more- do every little bit you can. Walk 30 minutes a day, park in the back of the parking lot, take the stairs, etc. Another way to fight the added inches to your waist is…

Eating right- it has been said for years now: for fresh fruits, vegetables and lean meats, less processed fat-filled food. Change the way you shop for groceries and make healthy substitutes. Also, cut back on salt to decrease your blood pressure.

Control cholesterol- ask your doctor about ways to keep your HDL (good) above 50 mg/dl and your LDL (bad) below 100 mg/dl.

Other ways to decrease the risk of heart disease are to quit smoking, de-stress daily and consider an aspirin a day. Juro’s Pharmacy Health and Wellness can provide customized Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy for women going through menopause, but you should consult with your doctor to see if this is the right choice for you.

You are important to your husband, children, grandchildren, family and friends, so we encourage you to take steps to reduce your risk of heart disease and live a healthy life!

Bio-identical hormone replacement from Juro's Pharmacy Health and Wellness can help make menopause easier to get through.

Despite the weather outside this winter, if you are a woman around 50 years old, you may have felt warmer than usual, maybe even hot. These occurrences, hot flashes, are signifying that you are entering into menopause, and while they may be the only symptom you see so far, there will be others. Juro’s Pharmacy Health and Wellness can provide a solution customized to you as you go through menopause because every woman has a different experience when it comes to this process.

Instead of the one-size-fits-all of most hormone treatments for menopause, our Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy is customized to your body and your symptoms. Our Compounding Center works with you and your doctor to find the best therapy based on your body’s responses. They can also give you your therapy in different forms such as capsules, suppositories, lozenges, topical creams and more.

Also, our therapy uses your own hormones in combination with a plant-derived hormone instead of the generic synthetic estrogen used in most treatments. This allows for much more efficient therapy in reducing the severity and occurrence of symptoms like decreased libido, night sweats, hot flashes and more.

We also offer, in association with the Yellowstone Naturopathic Clinic, hormone consultations. The professionals from YNC will help you understand your body’s various hormone levels, if certain levels are too high or too low and can make recommendations based on the results of the consultation. Contact us for more information regarding these consultations from the Yellowstone Naturopathic Clinic.

Between our Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy and the hormone consultations provided by Yellowstone Naturopathic Clinic, Juro’s Pharmacy Health and Wellness can help you or a loved one get through menopause as smooth as possible. Please contact us today with any questions or interest in these services.

A Month of Menopause Awareness

Posted on: October 18th, 2012 by JurosMedicalBlogger No Comments

There is one thing that all women, regardless of race, nationality or geographic location will have to go through at the same point in their lives: menopause. While this definitely is considered a women’s health issue, there has been a push in recent years to make information about menopause and other women’s health issues better known. That’s a large reason why the International Menopause Society (IMS) declared October World Menopause Month.

Every woman experiences menopause differently, so what not use a therapy that's customized to your body?

During this month, local organizations can collaborate with menopause societies and medical professionals and services to organize education events and activities. The focus for this year is creating awareness about the weight gain that occurs in many women during menopause and how it will affect them in post-menopausal life.  This information is crucial for the women who will face this challenge, as well as the males that they live with as they will have to be supportive and understanding of the changes occurring.

At Juro’s Pharmacy we offer a customized method to help reduce the severity of menopause symptoms. Our treatment, called Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT), uses plant-derived bio-identical hormones rather than the traditional synthetic estrogen in combination with your body’s natural hormones.

We recognize that all women do not experience Menopause the same, so through compounding we can create a dosage and strength that is ideal for your height, weight, needs and lifestyle. This results in less severe symptoms from menopause and a smoother transition to your post-menopausal life.

So, during World Menopause Month, we encourage you to seek out information about menopause, whether it’s from local organizations or from the IMS website. We also invite you to contact us about Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy to see how we can help you through this stage in your life.

Osteoporosis: Preventing Bone Loss

Posted on: September 8th, 2012 by JurosMedicalBlogger No Comments

Osteoporosis, though not strictly a medical condition that affects women, currently afflicts about one in five women over the age of 50 in the United States, as well as thousands of men 65 and older. It is caused by the reduction in estrogen production in women once they reach menopause, and by the lack of testosterone in men as they grow older. This results in a reduction in bone density because of no new bone growth or the bone is reabsorbed by the body or both.

Osteoporosis is more likely to affect women because of the decrease of estrogen production during and after menopause.

This leaves bones brittle and susceptible to fractures. In fact, many women and men who have osteoporosis don’t realize it until they crack or fracture a bone and have medical tests done. By this time the disease is in its advanced stages and damage to the bones is permanent. Unfortunately, treatment of osteoporosis is limited to pain management and trying to minimize the risk of falls that could result in more broken bones. However, osteoporosis can be prevented or slowed down.

The first step is knowing your risk for osteoporosis. You are most at risk if you have a family history of the disease, are a white female, drink large amounts of alcohol, smoke or get too little calcium from your diet. Once you have established your risk factors, change the ones that you can, most often your diet. Women needed added amounts of calcium and vitamin D to help absorb the calcium to encourage health, strong, dense bones when they hit menopause, and men need it as they begin to hit their sixties. The recommended amount of calcium that should be consumed each day is 1,200 milligrams per day, and between 800 and 1,000 international units of vitamin D each day.

There is no sure-fire way to avoid osteoporosis, but we hope following this diet will reduce your risk and slow down the degradation of your bones. For women, the Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy Replacement available from the Juro’s Pharmacy can help to minimize the effects of menopause and provide your body the estrogen it needs to keep your bones strong.

Managing Menopause

Posted on: August 16th, 2012 by JurosMedicalBlogger No Comments

Menopause is not exactly an event in our lives that we look forward to. We hear about it from our mothers or aunts or in videos in health classes we have to take when we’re younger. However, just like other not so pleasant things like taxes or sitting in traffic, menopause is inevitable.

If you're heading down this road in life, contact us about Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy.

Of course, we know that when we get to be in our mid-40s that menopause is just around the corner, and by 50 menopause will most likely be in full effect. Some of the symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes and night sweats, are easier to deal with than say, mood swings and behavior changes.

These changes in our body are caused by the decrease of the hormones estrogen and progesterone as we age. While menopause is a natural force in our bodies, we do have options as to how we experience it. One of these options is Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy, or BHRT, available at Juro’s Pharmacy.

Instead of using synthetic estrogen therapy, BHRT uses bio-identical hormones to better sooth the symptoms of our menopause. This therapy can ease discomfort from hot flashes, endometriosis, fibrocystic breasts, vaginal dryness and other menopause symptoms as well.

In addition, Juro’s can customize our therapy. Since every woman experiences menopause differently, many of the one-size fits all treatments are not as effective as we need them to be. The Compounding Center at Juro’s can give us each a customized therapy plan for our specific hormone levels. Not only is the dosage ideal for our hormone level, but the delivery form can be customized for what we like best, whether it’s a topical cream, capsule, lozenge and more.

Menopause can be a physically and emotionally tough time to get through for some of us, but we can make it easier on ourselves with Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy from Juro’s Pharmacy to help manage our symptoms effectively.

Beat the Heat of Hot Flashes

Posted on: April 26th, 2012 by JurosMedicalBlogger No Comments

Hot flashes – the most common symptom of menopause and our enemy for the next three to five years!

Cooling your hot flashes with lifestyle changes.

Cooling your hot flashes with lifestyle changes.

Hot flashes are when a woman experiences intense heat that generally starts in the face or chest and spreads to the rest of the body. This is accompanied by sweating and rapid heart beat and usually occurs before the onset of menopause. Hot flashes can last between a few minutes and thirty minutes with some women experiencing them multiple times a day for up to five years.

To beat hot flashes, you need to start with determining what your triggers are. Some of the most common triggers are increase in room temperature, spicy foods, meats or smoking. Once you determine what your triggers are, you can start to alter your lifestyle to avoid hot flashes or at least decrease their intensity.

For many women, the main lifestyle change is exercise. Regular exercise is known to lessen the intensity of hot flashes. One of the most popular exercise programs for hot flashes is water aerobics because it keeps you cool while working your muscles. Another common exercise is yoga because of its calming effect.

You’ve also got to get your diet right. It is a known fact that vegetarians have minimal hot flashes because meat is often a hot flash trigger. Many also experience hot flashes after eating spicy foods. To decrease or eliminate hot flashes, try eating mild foods and watching which meats trigger you.

One of the most effective ways to manage menopause symptoms such as hot flashes is to contact your local pharmacist and get started in hormone replacement therapy. At Juro’s Health and Wellness, our compounding pharmacist works with each patient individually to find the right mix of hormones to ease those symptoms.

Juro’s Pharmacy offers FREE Hormone consultations with Yellowstone Naturopathic Doctors. To schedule an appointment, please call 406-869-0143.

Mad About Menopause

Posted on: February 28th, 2012 by JurosMedicalBlogger No Comments

The latest news on menopause is that THERE IS NO CURE.  Well, that’s not the latest news.  This fact has been known for a long time, but fortunately there are newer ways to ease menopause symptoms.

Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement

We’ve all heard of Hormone Replacement Therapy, which can be very effective, but how often do you find yourself having the exact same symptoms as other women you know suffering from menopause?  You may be experiencing hot flashes and PMS while your friend’s symptoms are purely emotional.  As women, we are complex creatures who are all built differently.  Shouldn’t your menopause treatments be designed for you and your unique symptoms?

The answer may be Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement with a Compounding Pharmacist.  Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement is actually a natural hormone replacement as opposed to the synthetic hormone that they use in traditional Hormone Replacement Therapy.  Learn more about Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement.

The second part of this treatment is the compounding aspect.  Last week’

s blog Curious about Compounding described what compounding is.  Now, let’s discuss how it is effective in menopause.  We have a Compounding Pharmacist on staff that works with you and your doctor to create a treatment designed for your unique needs, as we described above.  This is a process in which we adjust dosage and substance of medication as we learn more about what your body responds best to.
