Keep Up with the Kids

Posted on: July 19th, 2012 by JurosMedicalBlogger No Comments

Being able to keep up with your active children or grandchildren allows you to experience more and be a part of their lives, especially now during the summer. However, certain medical conditions can get in the way of you enjoying time with your family outdoors. As we get older we become more at risk for developing osteoporosis or arthritis in our joints, more specifically in our knees (women are three times more likely to develop these conditions). These and other ligament or tendon issues in the knees can be quite painful and cause problems when we need to get around. The perfect way to stay mobile and not miss any of your children or grandchildren’s activities if you have a limiting condition is with a mobility scooter.

The perfect way to stay mobile and not miss any of your children or grandchildren’s activities if you have a limiting condition is with a mobility scooter.

Mobility scooters are built specifically to make traveling longer distance outdoors, such as sidewalks, walking trails or on short grass along a pond or lake, easier. The typical range for mobility scooters is 10-12 miles, so those longer family adventures can be handled without a problem. If you’re a family that loves the outdoors, the batteries can easily be recharged while you’re inside eating lunch or dinner before you head back out for afternoon or evening activities.

Using a mobility scooter also has many other benefits. It allows you to stay more independent, whether you are a senior in an assisted living facility, rehabbing from a knee replacement surgery or suffering from painful arthritis in your knees. Along with that, using a mobility scooter can prevent falls and slips that could occur while walking, in turn lowering the possibility of having to make expensive hospital visits. All of these benefits mean that you spend less time recovering in your home or a hospital and more time enjoying being around your family and friends.

Mobility scooters are a terrific way for you to keep up with any outdoor activities your family has planned this summer, whether it’s going on a walking trail at a family reunion or just an evening stroll. The Mobility Center at Juro’s Pharmacy Health and Wellness can help you find the perfect for a mobility scooter or any type of mobility equipment to ensure that you don’t miss a moment of family time.

Man’s Best Friend: Compounding for Pets

Posted on: July 17th, 2012 by JurosMedicalBlogger No Comments

Our pets can be as much a part of our family as we are. We play with them, feed them, get mad at them when we they make a mess and most importantly, take care of them when they get sick. However, most pets who have been to the veterinarian’s office recognize when they are being taken there or are very finicky when it comes to taking medications. For example, cats have been known to eat right around even the smallest of solid medications in their food. This and other problems can be solved through veterinary compounding.

Our compounding specialists can take your pet’s medication and mix it with flavoring that will make your pets want to eat it.

Veterinary compounding follows the same concept that compounding for humans does. It combines medications and other ingredients into pharmaceutical solutions for our small pets. One problem that veterinary compounding can solve is the flavor of the medicine. Like humans, most pets will not easily swallow a medication that has a taste the find unpleasant. Our compounding specialists can take your pet’s medication and mix it with flavoring that will make your pets want to eat it. Those finicky cats that ate around their medication will devour it once it tastes like tuna!

Again, just like humans, pets come in all sorts of sizes and shapes, meaning that a dosage that’s appropriate for an 80-pound golden retriever is not appropriate for a 10-pound chihuahua. While most medication tablets come in 100mg dosages or higher, your pet may only need 15-20mg at a time. Juro’s compounding pharmacists can create a custom dosage for your pet that better suits them.

We can also help if a manufacturer has discontinued a medication that worked well for your pet. We can create a prescription based on the medication at the correct dosage for your pet so that they can continue taking the medication that has benefited them in the past.

Pets can friends and family members for life, whether it’s a dog, cat, bird, snake, hamster or other animal. Keeping them in good health is part of owning them, and the Juro’s Compounding Center can help you do just that with our custom compounding solutions.

Compounding for Chronic Pain

Posted on: July 12th, 2012 by JurosMedicalBlogger No Comments

It’s normal for us to experience acute or temporary pain for a period after an accident, a broken bone, dental work, burns or cuts. This is how our bodies tell us something is wrong. However, acute pain can turn into chronic pain if it lasts longer than it should when pain signals remain active in the nervous system for weeks, months or years. This is a sign that our bodies are still under stress, and most of us go to doctors to try and relieve this kind of pain with anti-inflammatory medications, acetaminophen, painkillers like codeine or morphine or localized anesthetics. However, all of these solutions come with side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness or stomach irritation. Another solution to chronic pain management is compounding.

Compounding allows our pharmacists to take the pain relief of oral painkillers and combine it with a topical gel, cream or spray that won’t cause you any stomach irritation.

Compounding, the art of combining different ingredients into a pharmaceutical treatment, is effective in chronic pain management because it not only helps relieve your pain, but does so with little to no side effects like the painkillers do. Another reason that compounding can be very effective is because it can be customized. Our pharmacists can work with you and your doctor to not only choose the correct strength and dosage levels, but also the form in which you will receive your treatment.

Most pain relief medications are taken orally, but these can cause stomach irritation, or in the case of more powerful painkillers like codeine, can make you feel drowsy, dizzy, or slightly loopy. Compounding allows our pharmacists to take the pain relief of oral painkillers and combine it with a topical gel, cream or spray that won’t cause you any stomach irritation. Other forms of delivery include nasal sprays, lozenges or flavored troches.

Chronic pain doesn’t have to ruin your life, and you don’t have to compromise with the side effects of normal painkillers just to manage your pain. Compounding from Juro’s Compounding Center can help you better manage pain and live your life how you want.

Taking Mobility to the Next Level

Stair lifts provide you with a smooth, quiet ride to reach your upstairs bedrooms.

Stair lifts provide you with a smooth, quiet ride to reach your upstairs bedrooms.

If you rely on a wheelchair, power chair, mobility scooter or other mobility device to get around, you already know about the difficulties that can prevent you from being able to easily access some places inside and outside your home. Staircases in your home mean you have to either struggle up the stairs by yourself or have someone help you whenever you use them. And trying to take your mobility device anywhere can be also be challenging because you may not be able to fit your device in your car, meaning you’ll have to rely on a lightweight, collapsible wheelchair that doesn’t provide you with the comfort you need. On the other hand, there are options to address both of these situations.

If you or a loved one must use the stairs in your home regularly, a stair lift is a much more affordable option than trying to find a new house with rooms on one level. Stair lifts provide you with a smooth, quiet ride to reach your upstairs bedrooms. All you need to do is sit in the chair and relax as the lift glides you up the stairs using its battery powered movement system. Stair lifts are ideal for you if you live by yourself and want to remain independent or if a loved one lives with you and needs continuous assistance to get up and down stairs. Using a stair lift can decrease the strain on your body and theirs, preventing injuries and accidents.

Likewise, a chair lift for your vehicle can make transporting your or a loved one’s mobility device much easier. Whether you’re going across town or hundreds of miles away to visit family or friends, a chair lift stows your mobility device inside or outside your vehicle for a secure ride to your destination. And also like a stair lift, vehicle lifts are very easy to use.

Juro’s Medical not only has both stair and vehicle lifts, but trained and certified professionals to evaluate your home or vehicle, deliver, install and provide training for your lift. To schedule a free evaluation and estimate to increase the accessibility of your home or make your vehicle able to transport your mobility device contact us at 1-800-523-7404.
